Call for Papers

Internal Workshop
on
"Environmental Impacts and Sustainable Management of Tidal Areas"
During
ICID’s First World Irrigation Forum (1st WIF) and 64rd International Executive Council Meeting
------ October 2013, Mardin, Turkey

The coastal zone comprises only 3% of the earth’s surface and accommodates about 60% of the world’s population, a figure set to increase to 80% by 2050. As a result, 2/3 of those cities in the world, with a population of more than 1.6 million people are found in coastal areas. Coastal areas have a great ecological value, for recreation and tourism and provide habitat for many endangered species and also are source of 90% of the world's fish catch. When thinking of food demands of the future, one cannot ignore the coastal zone that provides both Paddy and fish. ICID took note of this way back in 2001 and established the Working Group on Sustainable Development of Tidal Areas (WG-SDTA).

Tidal areas, with abundant ecosystems, are important interactive water-land environments. Due to the global climate change, tidal areas are threatened by rising sea levels, extreme flood and drought events and so on. Environmental impacts in tidal areas should thus be well understood and sustainable management can then be planned and implemented appropriately. More studies and scientific opinions of the Environmental Impacts are necessary for Sustainable Management based on the learning process in the face of uncertainty. Upon the integration of various achievements of monitoring, forecasting, assessing, and decision making, the innovative measures can than be proposed and feasible strategies of sustainable management of tidal area resources can be derived. Therefore, in line with the theme and subthemes of the first World Irrigation Forum, the Internal Workshop is being organized.

The theme of the workshop is "Environmental Impacts and Sustainable Management of Tidal Areas"

The abstracts/papers are invited for the following topics:

(1)Impacts of climate change on tidal areas; Risk assessment; Adaptive management with consideration of climate change
(2)Flood/Ecosystem management: monitoring, forecasting, impacts, mitigation, strategies and vulnerability assessment
(3)Stakeholder involvement and integrated management

Schedule for submission of abstracts/full papers
